How Do I Adopt?
Applicants must participate in the Ontario Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education pre-service training program known as PRIDE. This training is 30 hours - 10 sessions of 3 hours each. During the pre-service training process, your worker will meet with you several times and you will be required to complete out of session assignment referred to as Connection assignments. The documentation and discussion that result will be used by the Adoption Worker to develop the Structured Analysis Family Evaluation, or SAFE, home study
Upon completion of PRIDE and the SAFE home study you and the agency will decide if adoption is the right choice for your family. If your family is recognized as an approved adoptive home, the information that you have shared during the training and home study process will assist your worker in the selection of a child for your family.
When a family has been matched with a child, a pre-placement visiting plan is developed to assist in the transition to your home. During the early stages of your child’s life with you, the agency will continue to visit and communicate with you. This probation stage allows parents to access support from the agency and the agency to assess suitability of the home and is a minimum of six months.
The final step in the adoption process is the legal finalization of the adoption in court. You may choose to have a lawyer assist you with the finalization documents and your Adoption Worker is also required to complete and file documents with the Ministry of Children and Youth and the court. The Adoption Order permanently transfers all parental rights and responsibilities to you. However, you may have an Openness agreement or Openness order that reflects the unique relationships between the adoptive family and the birth family.
